SlaughterHouse Five (Blog Post Journal Three) - Caitlynn Hancock

In this weeks reading chapter 5 and 6 of SlaughterHouse Five, my job was to be the 'starving artist.' In chapter 5, it talked about how the aliens trapped him in a glass globe in the zoo for Earthlings. I think this is very interesting. The chapter bounces back and forth from the zoo, to his honeymoon to the war and such. So I decided to bring a globe into the  literature circle to represent Billy being a naked earthling in the aliens' zoo.
Also, I made a connection with this zoo with two shows that I have watched. Futurama, an adult cartoon, was one of the connections. Two of the main characters Leela and Fry go on a trip together to a secluded island. Well, they ended up thinking that they were on a vacation, however, they actually were in a glass globe in a zoo for monkeys on another planet. This is almost exactly how it was in the book.
Another connection that really stood out to me was in the beginning of chapter 5, it talked about how aliens had earthling books, but only a few and he wanted to read one of their books. Their books were unusual and jumped from subject to subject and didn't make a whole lot of sense. WHich is quite interesting. Last week my group pointed out how in the book, it jumps around from place to place because Billy is time traveling and there are random line breaks separated in almost every chapter that don't necessarily make sense, which makes me think that this book is trying to mock how Vonnegut talks about the aliens.
One last thing that I thought was interesting was that he was in a mental hospital. I didn't really understand why they keep thinking that Billy is messed up from other things besides the war. One of the things that they said it could be from was going to the grand canyon and something about his dad and a swimming pool when he was little. I wonder if it's because he knows his own death how it talks about in the book, but I don't know if Billy has always been able to time travel or what.

  1. Hi Caitlynn,
Perhaps specify what you mean by how "Vonnegut is trying to mock aliens." I think this point is interesting to elaborate to solidify the connections you are making.
